The Chief
Tasked with improving the effectiveness of officers’ equipment, I set out to improve their recording and communication equipment. The Chief is more secure and smaller than their current radio microphones and body cameras.
First hand research
I went through an obstacle course setup by the officers. It is a condensed version of the same training courses the officers go through. With first hand experience, I documented how exhausted and stressed I was at each phase, giving insight to the difficulties the officers face.
Market research
Current body camera and uniform attachments.
ideation
With design criteria established, a lotus blossom is sketched out to generate a large variety of ideas corresponding to the criteria.
refinement
The Chief took initial form as one unit complete with all the amenities and equipment. But, after feedback from the officers, the unit was divided into two segments capable of acting independent yet unified.
mockups
After the design was refined, I 3D printed the design to see if it was of proper scale.
After rescale and redesign, the 3D models were correct and accurate.
