Modd2
Tasked with developing public furniture made from reused road signs and wood, Grant, Li, and I set out to make a modular system which could adapt to any public space.
Iowa Prison Industries
We teamed up with Iowa Prison Industries to help us on this project.
IPI provides offenders the opportunity to gain the skills necessary to transition back into society via product manufacturing within the penitentiary.
The furniture would be manufactured by the offenders at Anamosa State Penitentiary.
IPI already produces road signs and public furniture, making the team up natural.

Ideation
In order to accommodate the variety of styles and aesthetics of spaces across the nation, we decided on a modern, minimalist form. It would have room for public spaces to feel more up to date without detracting from the design language pre-established in the spaces.
Planter Module
The Planter Module can accommodate a wide variety of plants and foliage.
Seating Module
The Seating Module allows for easy resting without scorching one’s legs on the aluminum frame.
Bike Rack Module
The Bike Rack provides riders a convenient location to secure their bike while they rest or go about their other activities.
Waste Can Module
The Waste Can acts as a garbage receptacle for those within the public space. Its close proximity reduces the chances of waste cluttering up.
Configurations
The four modules can be connected and arranged in a wide variety of ways allowing them to easily accommodate any public space they are placed in.
